Using AI in your search

How to use ChatGPT or Claude to find a used car

An AI assistant can take on the thinking part of a car search: narrowing down models, reading adverts and working out what to ask. It can’t see a car’s record. This guide shows how to use the two together.

Can ChatGPT or Claude help me buy a used car?

Yes, for the thinking. ChatGPT and Claude can turn what you need into a shortlist of models, read an advert you paste in and suggest questions for the seller. They don’t know a particular car’s MOT history or whether it has finance owing. For that you run a check on the registration.

A car search with an assistant, step by step

  1. Ask it to narrow the field. Say how you’ll use the car, how many seats you need, what you can spend and what you won’t compromise on. Ask for five models to look at.
  2. Find real cars for sale on the listing sites.
  3. Get the registration for each one. GOV.UK tells buyers to ask the seller for it before going to see a vehicle.
  4. Run the free check on every registration. The assistant doesn’t hold DVLA or MOT records, so this part is yours.
  5. Paste the advert into the assistant, as text or as a screenshot. Ask what it leaves out and what you should ask the seller.
  6. When you have a paid report, download the PDF and upload it. Ask the assistant to explain anything you don’t follow.
  7. Check anything that matters against the report itself before you act on it.

Prompts you can copy

  • To choose models: "I need a used car for [how you’ll use it], with [seats and boot space], for up to [your budget]. Suggest five models, the years to look at and what to ask a seller about each."
  • To read an advert: "Here is a used car advert. List what it doesn’t tell me, anything that seems inconsistent and ten questions to ask the seller before I travel."
  • To understand a report: "This is a report on a car I’m thinking of buying. Explain the three things that matter most and what I should ask the seller about each."
  • To compare two cars: "Here are the reports for two cars. Set out the differences in MOT history, mileage and price in a table."
  • To prepare for a viewing: "Using this report, write me a one-page checklist for the viewing, in the order I’d walk round the car."

Letting an assistant browse for you

Some paid plans from OpenAI and Anthropic can open websites, click and fill in forms on your behalf. The names of these features change often, so check what your plan includes.

If yours can, ask it to look through listing sites for cars that fit, check each registration free at carconfidence.ai and save the good ones to a garage with the asking price and the advert link.

A garage built that way lives in the assistant’s browser, not on your phone. Open the garage settings there and link your devices. You get a link that opens the same garage on your own phone or laptop.

Don’t give an assistant your passwords or card details. Do the paying yourself.

What you still have to check yourself

OpenAI says ChatGPT can give incorrect or misleading answers and can sound confident when it is wrong. Anthropic says Claude can do the same and tells people not to rely on it as their only source of truth. In a car search that comes down to three habits.

  • Treat an assistant’s list of faults for a model as questions to ask. It hasn’t seen the car in front of you.
  • Anything it says about one particular car should come from a document you gave it. If it didn’t, ask where it got it.
  • If the assistant’s summary and the report disagree, go by the report.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT check a car’s MOT history?

Not from its own knowledge. It doesn’t hold DVLA or MOT records. Put the registration into the free check, then give the assistant the result if you want it explained.

Is ChatGPT or Claude better for buying a car?

We don’t rank them. Both can search the web and read a document or picture you give them, though what a free plan includes differs. Use the one you already have.

Is it safe to upload my report to an AI assistant?

A report describes the car, not you: it carries the registration and the car’s record. Read the assistant’s privacy settings before you upload any document.

Does George do the same job?

George is the AI voice inside your paid report. He reads that report and talks you through it. A general assistant helps with the wider search: choosing models, reading adverts and planning a viewing.

Can an AI assistant buy the car for me?

No. It can do some of the searching and the preparation. Seeing the car, checking the paperwork and paying are yours to do.
