Cookie policy

The short version

This site sets four cookies it needs to work. It also uses two analytics tools, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, and those set cookies only if you say yes when the site asks. Saying no changes nothing about how the site works.

You can change your answer at any time with Cookie settings in the footer of the site.

Cookies the site needs

These are ours. They are not used for advertising or to follow you around the web, and the site does not ask permission for them because it cannot do its job without them.

  • __Host-cc_session keeps you signed in. It lasts thirty days, or until you sign out. It only exists if you sign in.
  • __Host-cc_oauth_state and __Host-cc_oauth_verifier exist for a few seconds during sign-in. They stop somebody else starting a sign-in that finishes as you.
  • cc_consent remembers your answer to the analytics question, yes or no, so the site asks once and not on every page. It lasts 180 days.

One more of ours, cc_staff, is never set for visitors. The people who run Car Confidence set it on their own browsers so that their own testing is left out of the figures. It lasts a year.

Analytics cookies, only if you say yes

If you say yes, two tools are loaded and each sets cookies on this site:

  • Google Analytics sets _ga and one beginning _ga_. They tell one visitor from another so visits can be counted, and they last up to two years.
  • Microsoft Clarity sets _clck and _clsk. They join the pages of one visit together, and they last up to a year.

Microsoft also sets cookies of its own on its clarity.ms and bing.com addresses when Clarity loads. Microsoft lists them, and how long each lasts, in its Clarity documentation.

If you say no, or do not answer, neither tool is loaded and none of these cookies are set. If you change a yes to a no, we remove the ones on this site straight away and reload the page without the tools.

Storage that is not a cookie

Your garage, the list of cars you have checked, is held in your browser storage and not in a cookie. That means it is never attached to a request and never sent anywhere automatically. It stays on your device until you remove a car, clear your browser storage or sign in, which saves a copy to your account.

Payment and sign-in

Paying for a report and signing in with Google both happen on those companies' own pages. Stripe and Google set their own cookies there, under their own policies. Neither sets a cookie on this site.

Changing your mind

Cookie settings in the footer of the site puts the analytics question back up, with your current answer shown. Your browser can also block or delete cookies for any site. Blocking the four the site needs will stop sign-in from working, and the site will ask the analytics question again on each visit.
